We've got a beautiful weekend in store, says Monica, so it's a great idea to maybe head down the shore right. Why not? It’s what we do here every Friday on PHL17 and this week our Khiree Stewart is in Wildwood and he's about to talk about some food — some delicious food -- Now we really wish we were down there.
I mean what more can I ask for? I’m in Wildwood, I'm right next to the beach, and I'm surrounded by food right now but that's right -- I'm about to taste a little bit of food we're about to have the breakfast of champions as I call it.
I’m joined here with Brian and Chris. I’m going to start with these guys. They're with the Wildwood Pizza tour. Tell us a little bit more about what you all do and what the Wildwood Pizza Tour is.
Well we were sitting on the beach back in 2005, a group of five of us, and we're talking about pizza -- One of our favorite topics —And we realized there were a lot of pizza places on the boardwalk. There's a lot of good pizza but a lot of places we never tried and the only way to really figure out who your favorite slice is to literally try every pizza place. And we all somehow decided that would be a good idea to do and we all did it in one night. So we ended up reading about 20 to 25 places that night and every year we've kept up the tradition since.
So let me get this straight — you all went to 20 the 25 pizza shops in one night?
We did. One of our guys worked at a pizza shop he's really good with the pizza slicer so we just got one slice, we cut it up into five samples. We all sample it and then we rate it individually and privately and we figure out what the average is and that's how we determine the best slice.
Now what goes into rating like what do you look at? Like overall what determines the best rated pizza for you.
Well we look at everything. We look at the cheese, the sauce, the crust. We look at price and we look at the size of the slice that's given to us and and also if it tastes good -- that's my that's my thing. And the more grease the better for me. Others don't like it so much so for each judge we all look at the same thing but we all judge it differently and that's what makes it a unique experience.
All right so you’ve already done your ratings for this year and we have a winner.
Yes we do have a winner and I'm gonna defer to Chris because he did all the work.
So who's the 2019 winner?
We've been doing this 13 years the 13th annual winner is Mack's Pizza.
Okay Mack’s Pizza — they're really kind of a staple here.
Right. They are a staple here and they’ve won the pizza Tour four years out of 13 that we've done it. They're just a great slice and they really hit it out of the park this year.
All right, so guys, I mean we can't have this year without trying some so you're gonna open that up and we have some plates over here and some napkins I do want to try a piece quick, you know get a quick slice. Hey, he said it's cold but like you said pizza is good at any temperature so I’m gonna try a small little piece here. That is good, I really like that.
Set that down there. Now we have pizza here but we also have dessert here as well. This is Jason and he is with Douglas Fudge and you all are celebrating 100 years, right?
Yes, our hundredth anniversary you know one of the oldest family-owned and operated businesses in Wildwood we're really proud of that.
Tell us about what makes your fudge different from any other fudge place following the short you know?
Quality ingredients I think is the main thing that goes into it and we’ve got real experts making it. Dave who makes our fudge he's been doing it for 46 years so you know he's forgotten more about candy than most of us will ever know so he's really got it down to a science.
I end up trying a piece while you were talking. Tell us more about what these two kinds are.
This is our anniversary fudge here. We did a birthday cake fudge. It was actually my wife's idea. She said you got to do a birthday cake fudge for your hundredth anniversary you know so it's a cake batter flavor with sprinkles on top and then on this side we have our pumpkin fudge. It's extremely popular. We used to do it just one week in October and then people start calling now around middle of July so now we do it starting in August to get it going. People love it.
Both are really good. Jason thank you so much Congrats on 100 years that's really amazing all family-owned - I really love that.
Guys, I'm going to have a feast here but coming up so I'm gonna set it back to you but coming up in the next half hour I'm gonna hang out with the people back here. Of course we all know what Wildwood’s famous for — the Tram Car. Watch the tram car please I'm going to talk with one of the drivers more about the history behind it and the history behind that voice watch the tram car please. So that's coming up in the next half hour but guys right now I'm gonna enjoy a feast over here. We have pizza and dessert.
Well we don't want to interrupt you so go ahead and continue to eat. I envision Khiree on the tram car with a big pizza and some fudge. It’s the perfect breakfast. Like he is right now but just sitting.
